Afghan Women Activating their Right to Education

Empowering the next generation of Afghan women leaders through higher education in Canada.

The AWARE Program (Afghan Women: Activating their Right to an Education) is a flagship initiative of Women Leaders of Tomorrow (WLOT). It was created to provide talented Afghan women—particularly those who have lost access to education under the Taliban regime—with life-changing opportunities to study at leading Canadian high schools and post-secondary institutions.

Through AWARE, WLOT supports Afghan women in pursuing degrees in high-impact fields such as STEM, Business, and Sustainability, helping them build pathways to personal success, professional careers, and global leadership.

Program Goals

  • Access to Quality Education: Provide scholarships and academic pathways for Afghan women to study at Canadian institutions.
  • Leadership Development: Support the emergence of Afghan women as professionals and changemakers in their communities and beyond.
  • Strategic Partnerships: Work with universities and high schools to create safe and inclusive learning opportunities for refugee and displaced scholars.

Who We Support

The AWARE program is designed for:

  • Afghan women between the ages of 18 and 29
  • Individuals with strong academic potential
  • Women who are committed to beginning or continuing post-secondary education
  • Students who meet admission criteria of our partner institutions
  • Applicants currently living in Afghanistan or displaced in third countries with limited or no access to education
  • Those who require financial support to study abroad

Impact to Date

Since its founding in 2022, AWARE has proudly partnered with institutions like:

  • The University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver
  • Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ontario

To date, 13 Afghan women scholars have been admitted to Canadian graduate programs in mining, geology, and applied sciences through AWARE—with full scholarships secured thanks to the generosity of our donors and partners.
