High School Scholarships and Support for Afghan Girls to Learn, Lead, and Thrive

E.L.M. (Empowering Limitless Minds) is a scholarship program created by Women Leaders of Tomorrow (WLOT) to remove barriers to education for high school girls in Afghanistan. The program is named after the Dari word elm, meaning “knowledge” or “science,” symbolizing both cultural pride and a shared global belief: education is power.

At its heart, E.L.M. is about unlocking the potential of Afghan girls—giving them access to quality education, mentorship, and leadership opportunities, so they can build a better future for themselves and their communities.

Why E.L.M. Matters

In Afghanistan, millions of girls are denied their right to go to school. With education banned for many after sixth grade, young women face extreme limitations—simply because of their gender. At WLOT, we believe every girl has the right to learn, think freely, and lead boldly. Through E.L.M., we provide scholarships to help Afghan girls continue their education, even in times of crisis.

By investing in their future, we’re investing in a stronger, more equitable world.

Our Mission

E.L.M. empowers Afghan high school girls to:

  • Access life-changing scholarships
  • Pursue education safely and consistently
  • Build leadership skills through mentorship
  • Join a global community of changemakers
  • Dream beyond limitations

This initiative is more than financial aid—it’s a commitment to freedom, dignity, and opportunity.

How It Started

WLOT was founded by Afghan Olympian Friba Rezayee to promote gender equality through education and sport. In response to rising restrictions on girls’ education in 2021, she launched the E.L.M. program as a direct solution to support girls who would otherwise be left behind.

The name “E.L.M.” was chosen by the very students the program serves—young Afghan women determined to keep learning against all odds.

Our Vision for 2045

By 2045, we aim to:

  • Close the gender education gap in Afghanistan
  • Help more Afghan girls study abroad, particularly in North America
  • Support graduates into careers in sectors traditionally dominated by men—such as law, government, engineering, and public service
  • Grow a network of empowered alumnae who mentor and uplift the next generation
